History
Considered to be an aphrodisiac by the Aztek Indians, avocados are native to the Americas and have been grown in tropical regions of the Western Hemisphere since pre-Columbian times. Avocados were first imported into Florida in 1833 according to known records; they were later introduced into California in 1856. Commercial production in Florida is concentrated in Miami-Dade and Collier Counties in the southern tip of the state.
Like oranges and grapefruit, avocados are berries. However unlike their citrus cousins, avocados do not normally ripen on the tree. Ripening begins after the avocado is harvested or falls from the tree.
Each avocado variety has a "season of maturity" during which it can be harvested. It then takes 3-8 days for the avocado to ripen. Avocados ripen best at a temperature range of 60-75 degrees F and should not be refrigerated before ripening. A ripe avocado will yield to gentle pressure.
