History
The wooden field crate was the standard container used to transport Florida citrus from the grove to the packing house throughout most of Florida's proud citrus history. Each wooden crate would hold 90 lb. of citrus, approximately 1 3/5 bushels of fruit. The sturdy crates were made of wooden end panels and had two slats across the bottom and both sides. Metal straps were wrapped along the edges of the end pieces over the slats to strengthen the container.
Each crate was branded with the name of the grower or packer to whom it belonged. The sturdy crates would last for many years of service. In recent times, as heavy lifting equipment began to be used in the field, the crates were replaced by field boxes, each of which holds the equivalent of 10 field crates, or 900 lb.
Our old-fashioned Florida Citrus Grove Crate is a nostalgic replica of these traditional field crates, which can still be found in out-of-the-way places throughout Florida's vast citrus growing region.
