History
The flu epidemic of 1918-19 led to the popularization of orange juice with breakfast as Americans became more concerned about healthful eating. Many successful advertising campaigns boosted the popularity of orange juice, virtually all intended to sell packaged products.
After World War II a process was developed to create instant orange juice powder. Also in the mid-1940s scientists in Florida figured out a way to improve frozen concentrate, a development that made Florida the world's largest orange juice producer. The heat process used to concentrate the juice caused an unpleasant flavor, but it was determined that by adding a small amount of fresh orange juice to the concentrate the flavor could be restored. With this discovery, the industry grew dramatically.
While frozen concentrate is still an important industry, the market is now dominated by reconstituted concentrate and not-from-concentrate juice. A complicated manufacturing process utilizes blended juices, citrus extracts and natural flavor and aroma components to create a fresh product that comes as close as possible to mimicking the flavor of fresh-squeezed Florida orange juice.
All of these products have their place. But despite the best efforts of generations of scientists and manufacturers, one truth remains: Nothing beats the sweet fresh flavor and natural healthy goodness of fresh squeezed, grove-fresh Florida juice oranges.
