Like the more familiar Golden Navels, Florida Scarlet Navel Oranges are seedless, thin-skinned and easy to peel and section.
The Florida Scarlet Navel Orange is great for hand eating as well as fresh ruby orange juice. When used for juice they should be fresh-squeezed right before drinking for the best flavor and highest Vitamin C content.
Availability
Our Florida Scarlet Navel Oranges are available November to mid-December.
History
Florida red Navel Oranges are a "sport," or accidental variety, discovered in 1976 in Venezuela. Called the Cara Cara Navel after the Hacienda on which they were found, the first red Navel oranges
were brought to Florida soon after and became available as a specialty fruit in the 1980s. Similar to blood oranges, the red color is a result of an increased amount of lycopene, a carotenoid that appears naturally in the fruit and is in the same family as beta-carotene.
Through a process of grafting branches bearing red Navel Oranges onto suitable root stock, growers developed orange trees that produce these colorful Florida Scarlet Navel Oranges.
