History
Native to India and Southeast Asia, mangoes were introduced to Florida in 1833. Grown primarily in south Florida, mango groves were nearly wiped out by Hurricane Andrew in 1992. Groves have slowly recovered and have now reached half of the pre-hurricane plantings of 3000 acres.
The mango is known as the "king of fruits" in Southeast Asia, where it is highly prized, and is one of the most widely consumed fruits in the world.
